Valentine's Day Fruit Dessert with no added Sugar - Bee Mine!
Do you have someone in your family who doesn't like sweets, or can't eat sweets, or shouldn't eat sweets? How do you make a Valentine dessert "sweet" without adding sugar?
One way is in your presentation. With a simple bowl of red fruit, you can add special touches that will make this the "sweetest" Valentine ever! In this lens you will find ideas for how to make a bowl of fruit that your Valentine will really love, and then how to make a special "Valentine Bee" to send your "Bee Mine" message right to their heart.
Valentine Desserts don't have to be ultra-sweet to get your message across. All this dessert needs is your favorite red fruit, some whipped cream if you want to gild the lily, and some yellow and black pipe cleaners. Voila! A fantastic "sweet" Valentine Dessert for the special people in your life.
All the photographs in this page are taken by me of what we ate on Valentine's Day and they are now eaten up!
What fruit should I use? - Make it special, and don't forget their favorite fruits
All red fruits are a wonderful choice. Just go to the fruit section of your grocery store and look for red. But if your Valentine likes strawberries, they are an excellent choice to add in because you can cut them into heart shapes by cutting them top to bottom, and add some hearts to show your love. Here are some fruits to think about.
- Strawberries
- Raspberries
- Watermelon cut into chunks
- Cherries
- Red pears
- Pomegranite seeds
- Red apples
- Red grapes
- Pink grapefruit
There are so many ways you can make this - But if you like strawberries, they can be cut into hearts!
Use other fruits for contrast - Adding a little color other than red makes the red fruits sparkle
There are other pretty fruits that you can add to make the bowl even prettier with their rich color. Cut into tiny pieces, these fruits will add new flavors and accents to your bowl of fruit.
- Peaches
- Apricots
- Kiwi
- Melon
- Banana - I love adding bananas, but if you are making the bowl for someone who shouldn't have sugar at all, it is better to stick with the berries and other fruits which have less sugar.
- Oranges
- And don't forget a sprig of mint! It adds a minty twist and makes a nice place for your bee to land.
What you will need to make Valentine Bees - Watch the video to see how to make them, or see the instructions below
If you don't have yellow and black pipe cleaners, you can't make bees to easily, but you can substitute some of the other things. If you don't have tissue paper for the wings, you could substitute feathers, ribbon, or even a tissue. If you don't have googly eyes, you could just cut out black paper dots to glue on. These bees are not really complicated, and you can be creative with them. (Maybe try pink and black or purple and black bees?)
- Yellow and Black pipe cleaners cut into 6 inch pieces.(See the bottom of the page to order them if you don't have time to go to the local craft shop.)
- Yellow or white tissue paper for wings
- Googly eyes or black paper to cut dots for eyes, They are not necessary if you don't want them.
- Scissors and a glue stick or any other good glue

Pipe Cleaners - A Must Have!
I have to put in a good word for pipe cleaners. I keep them around my house all the time - they can be used anywhere a "twistie" can be use, and for dozens of other things, like tying together your computer cords or even as decoration. You may not have time to run out to a local craft shop, so I have put a link to where you can order them on Amazon.
Notes on how to fold the long pipe cleaner
A photo to make it clearer
Take a 12 inch pipe cleaner and fold in half. Then fold one end up on itself, so that the two parts measure 3 inches long. This part will become the body. Fold the other end up on itself too,. but when it is about half way along the body, at 1.5 inches, bend it down so that it becomes the leg that holds the bee up in the air on the dessert.
This is the shape of the 12 inch pipe cleaner when you are done bending it. Please watch the video so really understand the process.
Even if you want to just stick your bee into a cupcake, it makes a fun addition to a "sweet" Valentine dessert. Let me know what you think -
